Description:

Technology, especially in in-service teacher education programmes is often used in two ways. In developing countries technology often facilitates the initial training. In richer countries technology often focuses on improving classroom performance and updating subject knowledge. Distance education can play a key role in both uses of technology. The use of online and interactive technologies facilitates the distribution of material and encourages the interaction among teachers and between teachers and their mentors that is so important in fostering a community of reflective practicers.

About the speaker(s):

Sir John Daniel spent 17 years as a university president in Canada (Laurentian University) and the United Kingdom (Open University) before joining UNESCO as Assistant Director-General for Education in 2001 and becoming President of the Commonwealth of Learning in 2004. Knighted by Queen Elizabeth for services to higher education in 1994, he has received 30 honorary doctorates from universities in 17 countries.
Sir John Daniel is invited to Hong Kong by way of a generous donation from Dr. Tin Ka Ping.
