Visual literacy: Elements and Applications in K-13 School Settings

As societies increasingly use iconic and other visual representations, visual literacy is regaining its educational and critical status. This seminar describes visual literacy elements and principles, and suggests ways for K-13 educational settings to incorporate this literacy into the curriculum as part of information literacy.

About the speaker(s):

Professor Lesley Farmer coordinates the Library Media Teacher program at California State University, Long Beach, and also teaches educational technology. She earned her MSLS from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and her doctorate from Temple University. Dr. Farmer has worked in school, public, academic, and special libraries in the West and East coasts of the U.S. as well as in Tunisia. Dr. Farmer serves as incoming Chair of the Educators of Library Science Specialists Section of the American Association of School Librarians, and chairs the California School Library Association Research Committee. A frequent presenter and author, Dr. Farmer has written 18 books on librarianship, and edits Education Libraries journal. Her research interests include information literacy, collaboration, and educational technology (especially gender studies and distance education).
