Becoming a Change Agent: Implementing an Information Literacy Standard for Teachers

Both education and technology continue to develop at an increasing pace, and responding to that change is an important part of leaders' work. This workshop aims to provide a view of theories and models of change with information technology in education and to assist participants to plan their work as change agents who support schools and colleges to adapt to the needs of their twenty-first century society. Participants will become more informed about educational renewal with ICT, starting with an ecological and global perspective of educational systems and then zooming in, through models of change for a school, to an individual teacher's efforts to improve classroom pedagogy, finally ending our journey by considering the characteristics of the innovation that is the focus of adoption and/or rejection.

About the speaker(s):Niki Davis is Director of the Center for Technology in Learning and Teaching at Iowa State University (ISU) and a Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. She advises doctoral students at ISU and at the University of London Institute of Education. She is currently a Vice President and a past president of the international Society of Information Technology in Teacher Education (SITE). She leads a national project to incorporate Virtual Schooling (K-12 distance learning) in preservice teacher education. Her primary scholarship is in research and development of teaching over the Internet and through broader band technologies, especially teacher education and faculty development. She has published widely and edited the international scholarly journal of Pedagogy, Technology and Education. Current research interests include: constructivist approaches to distance education; and systemic change of higher education with new technologies, especially changes in teacher education. She is past chair of the International Federation of Information Processing working group for Educational Research and a member of the UNESCO task force for ICT teacher education. She has led many prestigious projects and established the first Telematics Centre in the University of Exeter School of Education in the UK. She has researched communications technologies within teacher education across Europe and the U.S. She is currently working on a book on Change with Educational Technology. She teaches on the same topic and prepares teachers for distance education, including Virtual Schooling. Previous books include Using Information Technology Effectively in Teaching and Learning edited with Bridget Somekh.
