Abstract:

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming many aspects of our lives, and education is no exception. In this talk, I will explore the current state of AI in education and its potential to revolutionise the way we teach and learn. I will contextualise the current excitement and hype around generative AI within the broader landscape of AI and the ways in which it is already being applied in education through adaptive learning software and educational data mining, for example, to provide more personalised and enhanced instruction.

I will also discuss the challenges and opportunities for schools and teachers as they apply AI technologies. For example:

  • What new competencies will educators need to leverage AI effectively?
  • How can educational organisations develop effective strategic plans in order to help them leverage AI for their teachers and learners?
  • How should teacher training programs adapt?
  • What is the impact on the teaching profession as more and more workplace and professional activities are automated?

In this talk, I will consider these key issues and questions in order to encourage school leaders and teacher trainers to thoughtfully engage with this transformative technology. Developing strategies for the effective, ethical and equitable implementation of AI will be critical to shaping the future of education.
